The Global Network
The World Network of Biosphere Reserves is continuously evolving.
As of 2023, the network included 748 Reserves (23 of which are transboundary) in 134 countries, distributed as follows:
The global network of reserves promotes North-South cooperation and serves as an important tool for international collaboration by sharing knowledge and experiences, developing capacities, and promoting best practices.
Building collaborative relationships – whether international, regional, local, or specific – among reserves is a central goal of the MaB Program. This is mainly achieved through the development of regional and interregional networks and programs, which have so far seen particular success in African, Arab, Asian, Caribbean, and Latin American territories.
There are also specific ecosystem-based networks (e.g., Marine, Coastal and Island Areas, Mountains, Savannas, Tropical Forests, and others) that provide valuable insights into sustainable development models, climate change mitigation strategies, and territorial adaptation measures.
