Objectives

The Miramare and Trieste Coast Biosphere Reserve fulfills all three core functions defined by UNESCO’s MaB Program:

CONSERVATION

Contributing to the preservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity.

Conservation efforts are ensured by the Marine Protected Area (MPA) of Miramare, which safeguards 120 hectares of sea through scientific research and conservation studies. The MPA is also a marine SCI (Site of Community Importance) under the European Natura 2000 network and a SPAMI (Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance) — a prestigious status requiring continuous sea health monitoring and biodiversity maintenance.

On land, the Reserve includes parts of two Natura 2000 sites: the Special Conservation Zone “Gorizian and Trieste Karst” and the Special Protection Zone “Karst Areas of Venezia Giulia”.

DEVELOPMENT

Promoting sustainable economic and human development, both socio-culturally and ecologically.

A Biosphere Reserve is not meant to be closed off but should remain open to the people who live and work there, fostering a space where tradition, history, environment, and socio-economic well-being coexist.

The Reserve pursues this goal through traditional and artisanal fishing using selective, low-impact tools, and mussel farming at sea. On land, it supports local artisanal production, such as viticulture and olive farming on the Karst terraces — practices with centuries of history that have recently seen a gradual revival after decades of abandonment.

LOGISTIC SUPPORT

Supporting demonstration projects, environmental education, training, research, and monitoring.

Natural resources, local traditions, and small-scale production activities are the focus of numerous research and awareness programs promoted within the Reserve.

Every year, thousands of students participate in educational projects and activities on marine ecology, sustainability, coastal biodiversity, historical-natural features, and land use. The Reserve also offers ecotourism opportunities both at sea and on the Karst ridge, boosting local micro-economies rooted in artisanal activities. Research projects aim to expand knowledge about marine and terrestrial environments, strengthen conservation efforts, restore damaged habitats, and revive traditional production practices.
